There is an extensive obituary of John's wife, Sarah Ann, in the newspaper, Western Times (Friday, October 12, 1934)
'The funeral took place in Cheriton Fitzpaine Churchyard, on Sunday [October 7, 1934], of one of its oldest and most highly esteemed residents, Mrs. Sarah Ann Greenslade, whose death at the advanced age of 81 years occurred at her residence, "Bowdell," Cheriton, after a short illness. There was a large number of sympathisers present. Although born at Bunleigh, North Tawton, deceased came to live in the village at the age of 18 years, and a year later married Mr. John Greenslade the village carrier to Exeter, and became the mother of eleven children--seven sons and four daughters. They lost one daughter by death, and the remaining ten children were present at the funeral. Her husband pre-deceased her on a day earlier in the same month nine years ago.
Deceased was devoted to her home and family, and had a pleasant word for all, with a ready sympathy wherever help was required. She was affectionately known as "Granny" Greenslade chiefly on account of her interest in the children....
The family mourners were Mr. William E. Greenslade, Exeter (son), Mrs. A. Heywood (daughter), Mr. John Greenslade, Shobrooke (son), Miss Ellen Greenslade (daughter), Mr. George Greenslade (son), Mrs. Homeyard, Creedy Bridge (daughter), Mr. Charles Greenslade (son), Mrs. L.
