The picture to the right is believed to have been taken when he was based at HMS Golden Hind, a British transit camp barracks at the Warwick Farm racecourse in Sydney, toward the end of 1945 when he was 36 years old. He had been in Tokyo Bay as part of the Royal Navy on HMS Newfoundland for the signing of the surrender by the Japanese at the end of World War II and was on his way back to the UK.
