Notes Transcript of John's baptism record says: "John Destories", Date of baptim/birth: May 25, 1880, Address: Buckleys Lane, Denomination: Roman Catholic, Father: Manuel Destories, Mother: Johanna Slocum, Sponsors: Daniel Bennett and Mary Slocum.

John was married twice. The first marriage to Mary in Youghal produced three children (John (Jackie), Thomas, George). John traveled to the U.S. in 1910 for about 1-1/2 years, returned to Youghal for a few months and emigrated to the U.S. March 1912 (without his family). Mary came to the U.S. to join him in 1913, however her son Jackie was denied entrance due to TB of the spine. Mary must have died soon thereafter as John remarried another Mary in 1916 and had another two children (Mary and Eileen).

John traveled to the U.S. via Boston June 2, 1910. Passenger documents show that he was traveling to his brother George in St. Louis, Missouri. His wife "Mrs. J. DeStories, New Cork Road, Midleton" was still in Ireland at the time.

In 1912 John emigrated to the U.S. (see record) without his family, arriving in Boston on March 15, 1912 on the ship Megantic. He is recorded as being "John D'Storeys" going to Hoboken, N.J. to his cousin "Richard O'Neill". His age is recorded as 30, fair-complexioned, black hair, his birthplace as Youghal, his nearest relative/friend in Ireland he gives as his mother "Johanna D'Storeys, The Mall, Youghal" [why did he list his widowed mother and not a wife?], He declares he was previously in the U.S. for 2 years until December 1911.

John completed a draft registration card on September 12, 1918 (see record). He gives his birthdate as May 23, 1880. He is of medium build, medium height, brown eyes, gray hair. He says he is not a citizen of the U.S. He is a citizen of Ireland. He is employed as a painter in Hoboken, N.J. He lives with his wife Mary in West Hoboken.

Catherine Webster told Connie Donoghue that John was born in 1883 (doesn't match with record above) died in the U.S. in 1929 and had five children: Jackie, Thomas, George, Eileen, Louise. Connie (who was born in 1924) remembered Jackie who died in 1935.

Notes The 1930 U.S. Census (see record) has the Destories family in Union City, Hudson, N.J. (Mary is widowed, so John died before 1930). Mary, head-of-house, widow, age 43 (age 30 at first marriage) emigrated to U.S. in 1905 from Ireland; Thomas: step-son, age 23, Single, born Ireland, emigrated 1912 [should be 1913]; Mary L.: daughter age 12 born N.J.; Eileen: daughter age 5 born N.J.

Mary's family name of NOLAN is not verified. The only record found was a family history listing on ancestry.com which says that John's wife was Mary Nolan. That history lists Mary having siblings: James, Kathryn, Michael and Shaun Nolan. It also says that after John's death Mary married Frank Scaramazza (b. Italy). If the remarriage is correct then the most likely death record for Mary is:
Maria Scaramazza, SSN: 147-18-4867, Last Residence: 07030 Hoboken, Hudson, New Jersey, Born: 8 Jun 1890, Died: Mar 1985, SSN issued: New Jersey (Before 1951)
