Cornelius Donoghue remembers being told as a child that Mary lived
by the quarry on Hangman's Hill, Youghal. Said to have been a wetnurse
for one of the Duke of Devonshire's children so was granted the right
to collect one shilling per cartload of sand or gravel taken from the
Green Hole strand, also control of bathing boxes. [Note that, to counter this story, the 6th Duke of Devonshire (was Duke 1811-1858) was a bachelor] Note that "Catherine Carroll" was a sponsor at the baptism of Mary's granddaughter Catherine Webster in 1871. Might Catherine Carroll be related to Mary Carrol? (A Catherine Carroll was baptised in RC parish of Youghal in 1811 *get copy*) As possible ancestors: There is a William Carrol and a James Carrol (both Protestants) recorded in the 1766 Youghal Census. It is stated in The Council Book of the Corporation of Youghal from 1610 to 1659, from 1666 to 1687, and from 1690 to 1800 (1878) p.506 "25 Sept 1782. Item: That Charles, son of Will. Carrol, and Christ. Stroud be admitted free of trade." | |
